Schantz’s color choices and application of thick, loose brush strokes, are reminiscent of les Fauves (French for “the wild beasts”), a group of Modern artists whose work appeared to have little restraint. In a similar vein to this fervor for color, Schantz is fascinated with “the character of light” and the range of slight to grand changes that transpire between changing seasons and times of day. His works explore the beauty of the “transitory moments” that occur at sunset, sunrise, dusk, and dawn — moments that we frequently forget to experience fully, or take for granted.
